Grips and Extensometer dedicated to tensile test on wires and strands

Wires are used in all manufacturing industry areas such as building engineering, electrical and energy technologies, aerospace, automotive and medical technology. Braided wire cables are used in load support applications in cableways, lifts and cranes, bridge construction, anchors, safety locks and much more

Strands are made up of 7 wires joined together by the helical shape of components. Tensile testing on strands is quite difficult, for the real nature of strands: individual wires have a specular surface with high mechanical strength. For this reason, the specimen slides easily from grips. The helical geometry of the component generates a torque effect that discharges the mechanical stress near inserts with an evident risk of breaking that could invalidate the whole test. Galdabini has developed suitable solutions to assure a good clamping of the strands with a simple specimen preparation. Even strain gauge measurement on strands meets difficulties associated with the torque effect during tests

For this purpose Galdabini offers specific Clip On extensometers with adjustable gauge length up to 600 mm or Video Extensometer that allows to calculate yield strength at 1% and also A% value at break. For these tests, it is necessary to equip testing instruments with interlocked safety barriers. For wire tests winding grips (if material diameter is lower than 3 mm) and special wedge grips with high-resistance inserts (for material up to 2300 MPa), are available
